About The Colour Run

Everything You
Need To Know.

The most colourful day in Soweto — where it came from, what it's about, and why you need to be there.

Our Story

The Soweto Spring Colour Run was born from a simple idea: what if we turned the streets of Jabulani into the most joyful, colourful celebration Soweto has ever seen? Not a race — a movement.

Every September, as spring blooms across Gauteng, we bring thousands of people together to run, dance, and paint each other in vibrant colour. It started as a dream between friends who wanted to create something that celebrated township culture, community spirit, and the unstoppable energy of Soweto.

This isn't imported culture — it's ours. From the food vendors serving the best kota in the south to the face-painting stations, every detail is rooted in the community. The Colour Run is proof that Soweto doesn't just keep up — it leads.

2026 is set to be our biggest year yet. New routes, bigger colour stations, and a finish line experience that will be talked about until spring rolls around again.

The Experience

Here's what race day looks like from start to colourful finish.

01

Check-In & Warm-Up

Arrive at Jabulani Precinct, grab your race pack (white tee, colour sachets, headband), and join the group warm-up.

02

The Run Begins

Choose your distance — 5KM or 8KM — and hit the road. Walk, jog, or sprint. There's no clock, no pressure, just vibes.

03

Colour Stations

At every kilometre, volunteers blast you with safe, vibrant colour powder. Pink, blue, yellow, green — you'll be a walking rainbow by the halfway mark.

04

The Finish Line Party

Cross the line and step into the after-party. Food trucks and the legendary colour throw countdown where thousands launch powder into the sky together.

The Route

8
8KM Route

The full experience. Wind through the heart of Jabulani Precinct, past iconic landmarks, through 8 colour stations, and back to the main stage for the biggest celebration. Recommended for runners and seasoned joggers who want the complete colour immersion.

5KM Route

Perfect for families, first-timers, and anyone who wants the full vibe without the extra distance. 5 colour stations, the same incredible energy, and you'll still cross that finish line covered head-to-toe in colour.

💧 Water Stations Every 2KM
🏥 Medical Support Throughout
🦺 Fully Marshalled

The Colour Powder

100% Safe

Made from food-grade cornstarch and FDA-approved dyes. Non-toxic, non-irritating, and tested for all skin types including sensitive skin.

🌱

Biodegradable

Our powder breaks down naturally. No microplastics, no chemicals left behind. The streets are cleaned within 24 hours and the powder dissolves with water.

👕

Fully Washable

One wash and your clothes are clean. Pro tip: wear white (we give you a tee!) and keep your phone in a ziplock bag. Sunglasses recommended.

Community Impact

The Colour Run isn't just an event — it's an economic engine for the community. Every year, we partner with local vendors, food stalls, and artists to ensure the money stays in Soweto. From the kota stands to the face-painting stations, local entrepreneurs are at the heart of everything.

We work with local schools and community organisations to provide free entries for young runners, and a portion of every registration goes toward community sports development in the area.

Every runner who crosses that finish line isn't just completing a run — they're part of something bigger. A movement that says Soweto sets the pace.
